How to Make Dal in Minutes

To make dal you need lentils (yellow dal), tomato, curry powder, salt, cooking oil and mustard seeds.

In Indian cooking we always garnish dishes by popping mustard seeds in warm oil. When they pop up they emit a good smell and add a nice flavor to the dish. You can make dal without this garnishing, if you like.

Just roast some tomatoes in warm oil. Add cooked dal, curry powder, and salt to taste. Boil for minute. Dal is ready.

To cook dal you can use a pressure cooker. Or you can cook it in the micro oven.

This cooked dal has to be boiled on medium flame over a stove with curry powder and salt. This part cannot be done very well in the oven.

Dal is very nutritious as it is full of protein. It is non-fatty and healthy. But the best part is: It is easy to cook and delicious to taste!

What is the Difference Between a Dosa and a Pancake?

Do you know what is the difference between a dosa and a pancake?

"Pancakes are a type of flatbread prepared from a sweet batter that is cooked on a hot griddle or in a frying pan. They exist in several variations in many different local cuisines. Most pancakes are quick breads, although some are also made using a yeast-raised or fermented batter". [Wikipedia]

Dosa is made out of a batter prepared with rice and lentils cooked over a frying pan with cooking oil. You can make different types of dosas such as crisp dosa, steamed dosa, carrot dosa, masala dosa, sweet dosa, etc. Dosa is an Indian dish that is usually eaten with coconut "Chutney", dal called "Sambar" and potato "curry".

Watch a musical video on making pancake and watch another video on making dosa to get an idea.

How to do you make a Pancake?

How to Make Dosa with Instant Dosa Mix?

You can use the same kind of mixer that is used for pancake, instead of mixing it with a ladle as shown in the Indian video. You can also add other ingredients to the dosa and make different types of dosas. You can eat dosa with the side dish you usually use with pancakes.

Rukmini's Rare Recipes - Instant Dosa Mix

instant dosa mix creator

This is my mother Rukmini, who has 60 + years of experience in cooking. She has been passionate about cooking and innovating new dishes that are easy to cook, healthy to eat and delicious to taste.

Most of her preparations were specially prepared for me. I hate spending time in the kitchen and whenever I am alone at home, I do not want to cook at all. So my mother has been couriering me special recipes that I can cook in minutes. Some of her creations I can eat even without cooking.

Her main concern has always been to ensure that the recipes she creates are nutritious. Each recipe is a full meal and a balanced diet.

My mother spends a lot of time in the kitchen. She tests and tweaks her recipes till they are perfect. She is never satisfied by her own creations and every time she makes a new recipe she would say, "This has not come out well. I should have stirred it for one more minute". All of us would be thrilled by the new taste of her creations, but she will go on perfecting it. At times we got irritated with her minute analysis of the recipes. We also used to get irritated with her desire to feed us till we almost shouted and said, "Not a morsel more, mom".

She loves creating new recipes and feeding others. Her house is full of guests and even at this age (she is nearing 80) she takes a lot of trouble to cook exotic recipes. Any unannounced guests will always get sumptuously fed whatever the time of the day, they may visit her.

Instant Dosa is just one of the many, many recipes created by my mother. She has tested and tweaked the proportion of the contents to ensure any one can cook delicious dosas in minutes and enjoy a healthy, nutritious meal.

The usual preparation of the dosa batter takes hours and you need to spend two days in soaking the grains, grinding it to a paste and allowing it to ferment. My mother found a way to cut short the process so that a person like me can prepare the batter under a minute and get the dosa ready in two more minutes.

The crucial difference between all ready mix products available in shops and Instant Dosa Mix is:

"This ready mix was not made to be sold. It was prepared by a mother for her daughter".

Why am I announcing the sale of the mix, you might ask...

I want to thank my mom for all that she has done for me.

Well, by the time we are to celebrate my mother's 80th birthday, I want as many people as possible to have tasted at least one of her creations and recognize her talent.

The packet, in fact, includes three of her creations. You will get free "chutney powder" and "curry powder". People who have tasted her chutney powder and curry powder keep sending me emails for days on end saying they have never tasted anything like that before.

Annabelle Nelson from Arizona says, "...It was easy to mix and cook, and the chutney with the coconut was outstanding. Excellent, nutritious and easy..."

Try her instant dosa mix once and you will never forget the experience.

I know the courier charges are deep. But in a San Francisco restaurunt, I have waited in line to get a place to eat their dosa... and it cost me $30.

Here for 1 lb of dosa mix, which can get you nearly 30 dosas, we are charging only $5.50. $65.50 is the shipping and handling charge for international orders. Even with a steep courier charge the amount is only $71.00. I would have had to spend $900 for 30 dosas in US.

The whole purpose of announcing this Instant Dosa Mix sale is not to make a lot of profit but to spread the word about Rukmini's Rare Recipes. Try it once and you won't regret it.

Should I Smear The Pan With a Little Oil Before Making Dosa?

I have been receiving some questions about making dosa.

One of the questions is about the use of cooking oil - when to use it and how much to use it.

You can smear the pan with a little bit of cooking oil before you make the dosa. It is not absolutely necessary, if you are using a non-stick pan.

But if you are making dosa for the first time, you may find it easier to fold and flip the dosa by smearing the pan first with a little oil.

If you want a crisp dosa, as you might have tasted in restaurants, you need to use two tea spoons of oil. You need to cook the dosa on low medium flame. The longer it takes to cook, the crispier it will be. Two tea spoons of oil around the dosa makes it very crisp.

If you want the dosa fat free, you can steam the dosa by covering it with a lid while cooking. You can use less oil this way. You can also make the dosa completely without oil.

For this take a piece of tissue paper folded into a wad. Dip it in water and squeeze out the wad. Smear the pan with that water. Make dosa with dosa batter. Cover the dosa with a lid. Steam cook it for a minute. Fold and flip. You must have a non-stick pan for this type of dosa. This dosa will not be crisp. It will be soft and tasty.

In the video you can see that no oil is being smeared before the dosa is made. Two tea spoons of oil is added around the dosa, after the circular shape is made on the pan. If you have not seen it yet, watch the video and learn how to make dosa.
